Why Functional Integration ?

Whatever someone’s physical diet or history, it is challenging for anyone to stay physically balanced in a more mechanized world. We don’t come with a “user manual” for our bodies. Having a strong body does not make us immune to injury or to misuse, or even uncomfortable posture. Often athletes suffer the greatest chronic injuries, not due to lack of strength, but simply due to repetitive and inefficient self-use. Functional Integration(R) is a form of Functional Medicine, a practical approach to whole systems wellness for this modern body. It works only by doing, which makes it practical. it teaches us how to support our bodies with a structurally-based power, to incorporate proper muscle coordination with action.

 

Let’s not forget that the limited function or loss of function … what pain is a symptom of … is a lessening of the individual and the quality of life.

Functional Integration® is an individualized, hands-on, movement-based process of motor re-education for retraining the living body brain complex, developed by Moshe Feldenkrais, PhD, late Russian physicist and specialist in human behavior. Functional Integration is often used in addition to or with as an alternative to standard Physical Therapy.

 

In Functional Integration®, specific movement compositions are used to affect the brain and how it perceives and controls different patterns of physiological movement

 

With Functional Integration®, inefficient patterns are detected; broken apart and new pathways established.

 

This is where Functional Integration® diverges from other methods that are corrective, invasive, or model-based. New habits are introduced and stay.  As we now know, stress impairs the efficiency of our work and strains our body, depleting very important energy. With Functional Integration®, compromised ways of doing things can be redirected into new and efficient ways of accomplishing our goals in action.

Private Sessions

Sessions are private, individualized and designed per session according to what’s immediately needed. Clients take sessions weekly or monthly according to what needs to be addressed. People come for issues of chronic pain, injury, fatigue or simply the desire to perform better and more efficiently with a happy body.


Sessions are typically 60 minutes long. They take place usually lying down or seated, fully clothed, on a padded table where you are guided and moved with an intelligent touch that is non-invasive, sensitive and extremely precise.


Functional Integration® is widely recognized for its ability to successfully address everything from simple stress on the body to serious muscular-skeletal and neurological challenges such as back, shoulder and hip imbalances.

How to use Physika.

Physika works in two stages, which generally overlap. Try Physika I, Physika II or both…according to what you need at the present.


We begin with a physical interview.  I usually observe you as you walk, I will ask you what feels wrong or painful at the moment. I may observe your back as you to sit on the edge of my padded table and have you pretend to tie your shoe. I place a hand on the back of your chest while you move slightly or gently roll your head left and right. Sessions are individualized, hands-on and mostly non-verbal. . Functional Integration® addresses individual issues that often cannot be dealt with directly in a group-learning situation.

Physika I: Restorative Integrative

This is a completely supported situation. The client learns in an environment of movement and of being moved. This restores and re-educates the motor system for a flexible, more comfortable body. Sessions are paired with audio study provided by My Physika for further healing.

Physika II: Integrative Strengthening

Now we integrate new ways of applying power with movements and skill sets using both floor and supportive coiled weights to immediately improve core and full body coordination. Best for stability, joint mobility, strength, flexibility, and a powerful core.


RESTORATION

Laurel works with you and your present state, understanding what causes pain or weakness in the body. Laurel “teaches” with her hands, by directing attention to habitual movement patterns which are inefficient or strained in you, and offering new patterns by using gentle, slow, repeated movements. You remain comfortably clothed on a low padded table.

INTEGRATION

Slow repetition is believed to be necessary to impart a new habit and allow it to begin to feel normal. These movements may be passive, (full support by the practitioner) or active (performed by the client).

STRENGTH

After integration begins, you and Laurel work together with variations in movement on the mat, sometimes using specialized Pilates equipment sometimes not. You learn how to take what you have integrated and apply it to your life.  That may include running, athletics, supporting others, gardening, biking, performing or simply recovering from pain to build a sounder stronger more integrated whole body.
